Wins for Raffish and Welcome Stranger

Sunday, July 17, 2005

The stable has really hit top form now with wins for RAFFISH and WELCOME STRANGER this week. RAFFISH seemed to appreciate the step down in trip and in class to win nicely at Lingfield on Wednesday. Both his wins have now been on this track but on different surfaces, this race was on the turf. He is a very genuine horse who always does his best so it was nice to see him get back to winning ways again. He may run again at Nottingham on Saturday over the same trip and in similar company. Now he has hit form he could win again.

Any worries about the step up in trip for WELCOME STRANGER were dismissed when he stayed on well to win the Listed Steventon Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. He looks as if he could be even better over this trip so this will open up further opportunities for him. He seems to always come good at this time of the year and really appreciated the fast underfoot conditions. Luke Fletcher gave him a confident ride and it was one his biggest riding success’s to date.

There are only a few likely runners this week. HIGHLAND CASCADE is out to follow up her recent Chester win with a trip to Ayr on Tuesday. She did have an engagement at Windsor tomorrow but James Eustace is hoping the ground will be better in Scotland. She would not want it to be too firm. As Chester was her first run after a break she should have improved for that run so can go close again. PRINCESS GALADRIEL also runs on Tuesday but a bit closer to home. She travels to Yarmouth where she has won before so hopefully she will run well. She was found to be in season after her last run at Leicester so she should run better this time.

MISSED TURN is entered at Lingfield on Saturday. The track and the distance are ideal for her but she may get balloted out. This will be her first run back after a break if she gets in the race.

On Sunday WESTER LODGE is due to run at Newbury in a 3 year olds only 66-85 12 furlong handicap. He has a current rating of 75 so should get in the race with a good racing weight. James Eustace’s strike rate at Newbury is very good especially this season with 2 listed wins there already. He is hoping that WESTER LODGE can improve the strike rate even further, the track should suit the horse well.
