Welcome Stranger wins on final day at Ascot

Monday, September 27, 2004

WELCOME STRANGER won the Nick Cheyne Farewell stakes at Ascot yesterday in fine style. Ascot has always been a lucky track for James and it was a real thrill to win a race on the last day at the present racecourse. He just hopes that the new racecourse will be as lucky for him . Welcome Stranger had a very good chance on the books as he was effectively 5 pounds better off than on his last run at Doncaster where he was 2 pounds out of the handicap. Luke Fletcher’s 3 pounds claim made all the difference and he does seem to get on very well with this horse. He will be kept in training next year with races like the Hunt Cup as targets. It will be a shame obviously that this race will not be run at Ascot next year as he does seem to run particularly well there.

This weeks runners are thin on the ground as there are only 3 likely runners. ELM’S SCHOOL BOY is running at Nottingham on Wednesday over 5 furlongs. He showed a lot of speed on his first run at Sandown but he may find the trip a bit on the sharp side on an easier track. On Saturday CONSIDINE runs at Newmarket in a 14 furlong 3 year olds only handicap. He is a long striding horse so the track should suit him. As it is a year of firsts, maybe he could give James his first winner on the Rowley Mile racecourse. Orcadian travels to Redcar on Saturday for a Listed 7 furlong race. He was slightly lame 2 days after his last race at Newbury and was found to have pulled a muscle but has now fully recovered. He seems in good form at home so hopefully he will run a good race.

EDITOR’S NOTE- a quote from the trainer from this week” The best runners we trained this week were Simon and Lucy Lawson who completed the Great North Run in under 2 hours”. However this was actually just a warm up race for the Dublin Marathon that they are both running in on October 25th. They are running for CANCER RESEARCH UK so if anyone would like to sponsor them for this please send a cheque made payable to Cancer Research UK and send it C/o Park Lodge Stables. It would be greatly appreciated.
