War Artist gains prestigious Group 2 victory

Monday, August 31, 2009
WAR ARTIST gave James Eustace his first Group 2 winner yesterday in Baden Baden . It was fitting that it was WAR ARTIST as he is the best horse he has trained, hopefully he can go one step further and be his first Group 1 winner too. For once this season, the ground was in his favour, and he won nicely, given a patient ride by the jockey. It meant an awful lot to the German owner to win this race as it is one of the most prestigious races in the German calendar. The trophy has been going for 139 years and is a gold whip inscribed with all the previous winners names. James Eustace got a taste of how it feels to win an olympic medal as he stood on the winner's podium while they played the English national anthem! It was truly a great day for owner, trainer and all the team at Park Lodge Stables.
WAR ARTIST'S next race is likely to be the Petit Couvert, a Group 3 race at Longchamp on September 13th. This is generally a trial for the Group 1 Prix de L'Abbaye 2 weeks later and this will hopefully be the next race for him. He will be dropping back to 5 furlongs which James Eustace is quite keen to do as he won't be so worried about the ground over a shorter trip. He feels it is lack of stamina rather than the ground which finds him out over 6 furlongs on soft ground. The long term target for WAR ARTIST is the Hong Kong sprint in December.
SALDEN LICHT is now a non runner at Ripon today as the ground is not soft enough.
