Turf season gets into top gear

Tuesday, April 13, 2004

The Craven meeting began today at Newmarket and in many people’s eyes this signifies the real beginning of the turf season. Evening meetings are just about to start so the season is gaining momentum. There are a few runners coming up this week.

ANDURIL runs at Beverley tomorrow in a 7 furlong handicap. James hopes this race will suit him but he still he sees it as a slightly exploratory mission. On Thursday CONSIDINE runs in the first race at Southwell. He should run well but the trip may be a bit short for him. LIGHT BRIGADE runs at the same meeting. He ran well on his seasonal debut over 1 miles and has been dropped back in trip to 1 miles which should suit him. His last race should have bought him on a bit as he had had a long break.

Moving on to next week, EMPRESS EUGENIE is set to make her first racecourse appearance on Monday evening at Windsor. She will definitely need the run as she is a very laid back filly at home. LANDING STRIP could also run at Windsor in an apprentice handicap. He was disappointing on Monday at Kempton but seems fine after the race, let’s hope that his last run can be ignored.

FOUR KINGS is due to run on the turf at Southwell on Tuesday over 6 furlongs. He seems to have come on for his first run when he found the trip a bit on the sharp side. Hopefully the extra furlong will give him a chance to get into the race and he will run well. If the weather remains fine OVERRIDE could run at the same meeting in a 7 furlong handicap. He is actually entered this Friday at Thirsk but is very unlikely to run there, he needs fast ground to be seen at his best.
